What this means

  • At 8.25%, each $100 spent on taxable items adds $8.25 in tax.
  • Rates depend on the exact address and the item. Groceries, clothing, and medicine are taxed differently in some places, so a receipt can show a different figure.

How do you calculate sales tax on a calculator?

Multiply the price by the rate as a decimal, then add it to the price. For a $100.00 item at 8.25%, the tax is $100.00 × 0.0825 = $8.25. Multiplying by 1.0825 gets you the total of $108.25 in one step.

Tax = price × rate ÷ 100 Total = price + tax

Your combined rate is usually the state rate plus any city and county rates, which is why the calculator takes them separately. Businesses typically round tax to the cent, and rounding rules can differ from one state to the next.

How do you reverse sales tax from a total?

Divide the total by 1 plus the rate. A $108.25 total at 8.25% is $108.25 ÷ 1.0825 = $100.00 before tax, which means $8.25 of it was tax.

The common mistake is to take 8.25% off the total. That gives $99.32, which is too low, because tax was charged on the smaller pre-tax price and not on the total.

Choose Remove tax in the calculator. This is useful for expense reports and for splitting a bill into its price and tax.

How do you find the sales tax rate from a receipt?

Divide the tax by the pre-tax price. An $80 subtotal with an $86.60 total has $6.60 of tax, and $6.60 ÷ $80 is 8.25%.

A rate that looks too low may mean that some items on the receipt were not taxed, because the tax applied to only part of the subtotal.

Big purchases are where a rate difference shows up. On a $32,000 car at 7.5%, tax is $2,400.00, and many people finance it along with the car. The auto loan calculator includes that, along with how a trade-in can change it in some states.

How do you split a receipt for an expense report or bookkeeping?

Use Remove tax when a receipt or card statement only shows the total. A $254.80 total at 7.5% is $237.02 of goods and $17.78 of tax.

If the receipt shows the tax line, use that figure, since it reflects exactly what the seller charged. Working backward is an estimate when some items on the receipt were exempt, because the tax then applied to only part of the total.

If you run a business that collects sales tax, this calculator is for checking arithmetic only. What you must charge, on which items, and in which states is set by each state’s rules, so use your state revenue department or a tax professional.

How much does your sales tax rate matter over a year?

A difference of a few points adds up on everyday spending. With $15,000.00 a year of taxable purchases, a 6% rate costs $900.00, and a 9.5% rate costs $1,425.00. That's $525.00 a year.

This is worth counting if you’re comparing places to live, alongside income and property taxes. A low sales tax can come with higher taxes elsewhere, so no single rate tells you the whole picture. The state income tax calculator covers the income side.

It also matters on a single large purchase. Before driving to another county to save on a big item, check that the rate really differs for your purchase. Vehicles, for example, are often taxed based on where they’re registered, so check the state’s rule first.

Why your sales tax may not match a simple rate

  • Your exact address. Local rates can change from one side of a city boundary to the other, so a ZIP code may not be precise enough.
  • What you bought. Some states tax groceries, clothing, or medicine differently from other goods, or not at all.
  • Where you bought it. Online orders are generally taxed based on where the item is delivered, under each state’s rules.
  • Shipping and fees. Whether delivery charges are taxed differs by state.

For example, 8.25% on a $1,200 laptop is $99.00. If the rate you assumed is off by a single point, the answer moves by $12.

To get an exact rate, use your state revenue department’s lookup. The Federation of Tax Administrators links to every state’s tax agency. A few states have no statewide sales tax, and some of those still allow local taxes, so check before you assume the rate is zero.

Common questions

Is sales tax included in the price?

In the US, listed prices usually exclude sales tax, and it is added at the register. If you have a tax-included total, use Remove tax.

What is the sales tax on $100?

It depends on your rate. At 8.25% it is $8.25, for a total of $108.25. The table above shows other rates.

Can I deduct sales tax on my federal return?

If you itemize, you can generally choose to deduct state and local sales taxes instead of state and local income taxes, subject to limits. IRS Topic 503 explains it, and our income tax calculator has a field for itemized deductions.

Does this calculator know my state’s rate?

No. Rates vary by address and change over time, so you enter your rate. The default is only an example.

How do I work out a sale price and then the tax?

Use the discount calculator first. Sales tax is generally charged on the discounted price, though the treatment of some coupons varies by state.
