What this means

  • Local income taxes are not included. Some cities, counties, and school districts add their own.
  • About 4.31% of your income goes to California income tax, though your top rate is 9.3%. Deductions and lower brackets pull the average down. These figures reflect tax year 2025.
  • Includes the 1% Behavioral Health Services Tax on taxable income over $1 million.
  • The $153 personal exemption credit is taken off the tax.
  • Not in this estimate for California: Dependent exemption credits and the exemption credit phase-out at high income. The California earned income tax credit and other credits. Other credits, itemized deductions, and adjustments to income.
  • Compared with Texas, California costs about $3,660 more in state income tax on this income. Income tax is only one cost: property tax, sales tax, housing, and insurance can change the answer.

How much state income tax will I pay?

It depends mostly on where you live. On the same $75,000, the states we could confirm range from nothing in the states with no wage tax to $5,077 in Oregon. Among states that tax wages, the lowest here is North Dakota at $182.

Your own number can be lower. Many states offer dependent exemptions, credits, and retirement income breaks that this tool leaves out. The tool lists what's left out for each state.

How is state income tax calculated?

Most states follow the same three steps. Start with your income, take off a deduction and exemptions, then apply a rate. In California, $75,000 less a $5,706 deduction leaves $69,294 taxable, which runs through nine brackets, and a $153 credit comes off at the end. That gives $2,775, an effective rate of 3.7%. North Carolina takes off $12,750 and applies one rate, for $2,484.

The details vary in ways that move real money. Some states use the federal standard deduction, some set far smaller ones, and some have none. Colorado, Iowa, North Dakota, and South Carolina start from federal taxable income. Many states double their brackets for married couples, but some, such as Delaware and Virginia, use one schedule for every filing status.

Which states have no income tax on wages?

We confirmed these from official state sources: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wyoming. They have no tax on wages. They raise money in other ways, such as sales, property, or business taxes, so a lower income tax doesn't always mean a lower overall bill.

Washington's Department of Revenue says it doesn't currently have an individual income tax, and that a new 9.9% tax on adjusted gross income over $1,000,000 takes effect January 1, 2028.

Why can your state tax be more or less than the brackets suggest?

The brackets aren't always the whole story. These rules are modeled here, and they're easy to miss:

  • Recapture in New York. Once income passes $107,650, New York removes the benefit of its lower brackets. A single filer at $200,000 pays $11,328, a flat 5.9% of taxable income, rather than the lower amount the schedule alone gives.
  • Phase-outs in Connecticut. Connecticut's exemption, low-rate bracket, and personal credit all fade as income rises, so its effective rate climbs faster than its rates suggest.
  • Deducting federal tax. Alabama, Oregon, and Missouri let you subtract federal income tax, within limits. In Oregon, a single filer at $60,000 subtracts about $5,020. In Alabama at $50,000, about $3,820. This tool estimates that federal figure at the standard deduction, so yours may differ.
  • Sliding deductions in Wisconsin. The standard deduction falls from $13,960 at $20,000 of income to $0 at $140,000.
  • Surtaxes. California adds 1% over $1,000,000 of taxable income, and Massachusetts adds 4% over $1,107,750. Both are included.

Where do these numbers come from?

Each state's figures come from a document or page at its own revenue department or, where that site was out of reach, another official state source such as its statutes. The tool shows the link and tax year. We checked them on 2026-11-04. Of 51 jurisdictions, 47 are confirmed: 27 use 2026 figures, and 20 use 2025, the latest we found complete. States often publish their full schedules only near filing season, so a state on 2025 figures may have changed rates for 2026.

We couldn't confirm Idaho, Maine, Michigan, Rhode Island from an official state source we could open. For these, the tool says so and asks you for a rate rather than show figures we can't stand behind. Check those states' websites directly.

Some 2026 entries mix years. For example, a state may publish its 2026 rate before its 2026 deduction. The notes beside each state say so. Withholding tables and estimated tax forms are sometimes the first place a new rate appears, and those are what we used for several 2026 entries.

What this state estimate leaves out

This treats all your income as wages for a full-year resident, with no dependents. Local income taxes are not included, and they can be large in places such as New York City, Maryland's counties, and Indiana's counties. It leaves out most credits, retirement income breaks, and itemized deductions, and any surtax or recapture rule unless that state's notes say it's modeled. If you lived or worked in more than one state, you may owe in both and claim a credit, which this doesn't cover.

Moving for taxes? Compare the whole picture, including property and sales tax, insurance, and housing costs. For take-home pay with these rates, use the paycheck calculator, and for your federal bill, the income tax calculator. Your state's revenue department or a tax professional can answer specifics.

Common questions

Does this include city or county income tax?

No. Local taxes aren't included anywhere in this tool. If you live somewhere that has one, add it separately.

Why does the tool ask me for a rate in some states?

Because we couldn't confirm that state from an official source when we checked. We'd rather say that than publish a number from a secondary list. Your state's revenue department can give you the rate.

What is the difference between marginal and effective rates?

The marginal rate applies to your next dollar. The effective rate is your total tax divided by your income. At $75,000 in California, the top bracket is 8%, but the effective rate is 3.7%.

Can I compare states before moving?

Yes. Add states under Compare states. The tool also lists every state on your income in a table you can download.

Do retirees pay state income tax here?

This estimate treats income as wages, so it doesn't show retirement breaks. Many states tax Social Security and pensions differently, so a retiree's tax can be much lower than shown. Check your state's rules.

Are these 2026 rates?

Where the state has published them. The table shows the tax year for each state. As of 2026-11-04, some states' latest complete schedules are for 2025.
